Comparison with Harbor Digital Flash Extender

I've been using Better Beamer for a long time. It competes with Harbor Digital Flash Extender and each has its own pros and cons. Having recently tried Harbor Digital's product, I thought I'd write a comparison report for anyone interested. Better projector is cheaper. It folds very conveniently, which is why so many professional wildlife photographers use it. It's effortless to take to and from the field, and that portability with the accessories is a huge benefit. It suffers from some degree of droop and works best when a flash is attached so the droop can be compensated. Flash is not required, it just helps a lot if you go to 800+ mm with teleconverters. That's really the only downside. It takes a little longer to set up and there is a risk of burning holes in the hardware, but these are very minor issues that are easily avoided. Better Beamer also projects a narrower area with brighter light than Harbor Digital at equivalent flash magnification settings. This makes the Better Beamer better for very long focal lengths. The Harbor Digital Extension is a sliding block. It's bulky and doesn't pack well. It's about as light as the Better Beamer, but it's actually bigger than it looks. It doesn't suffer from the sagging issue that the Better Beamer suffers from, but it does have a really hard time getting the flash on every time I put it on. It also offers a more even flash across the image. where Better Beamer had Fresnel lens refraction artifacts in light emitted at a distance. However, it is barely noticeable, but there is a difference. I would not try to use Harbor Digital in the field. Either is fine, you just need to evaluate your application and decide if you want portability or a little more even lighting across the frame. If you need sports fill flash, use Harbor Digital. However, Better Beamer is much better when you are shooting subjects in nature. All you have to do is evaluate your application and decide if you want portability or a little more even light across the frame. If you need sports fill flash, use Harbor Digital. However, Better Beamer will be much better if you photograph objects in nature.
