Review on Sky Kennel Pet Carrier by Petmate by Miriam Moore

Approved by CARGO March 2021 WITH PROPELLER MODIFICATION

I will try to help anyone who has not flown with a pet as CARGO as I find the process a royal pain. Two cats from Ohio to Hawaii. I'll get to Hawaii later, but here's what you need to know. We chose American Airlines as they were the only ones carrying pets as cargo due to COVID. I bought medium sized cages for 14 lb cats to give them space. Totally normal. Easy assembly and no damage. Comes with separate food and water tank, decals and screws with PLASTIC wing nuts. You need to buy a kit of metal fasteners - everything is in the photo. I bought the pet kit thinking I needed it which was a waste of money except I used these screws because I didn't have time to just get the screws. Make sure you have enough - I think 12 per box. The cage has adequate ventilation. There are 4 holes used to tie the door closed. The truck technician used his drill to enlarge the holes. And don't tie anything, as they'll search your entire cage while you're holding the animal, including food. It helped that I portioned the food into bags, which he said saved him from throwing the bags away. You can't sedate your animal and sign a form saying you didn't. They fill out the label, which they provide with food instructions. I added more live animal stickers and the airline added arrows. Paperwork is also a PITA so check the website as things are subject to change. Medical certificates are only valid for 10-14 days - be sure to check them. And you can only book for 10 days, which makes coordination difficult. We had everything except an AA form signed by the vet. Even if it is in a different form, they will not accept it. (The vet faxed immediately.) Temperature is important. 45-75 degrees. Check every step of the flight. Also the type of aircraft. Americans only transport animals on large planes, so make sure every foot is on the right track. And airport rules. Most want pets there at least 2 hours before departure PLUS checking if they're departing at the gate or cargo (learned the hard way - CMH is cargo for a box this size, which was actually easier). PRICE - Each cat costs as much as a single trip - almost 400. By staying in DFW it costs 200 more per cat. Mind you, these are my daughter's cats - I'm not that stupid. Just dumb enough to be a cat driver. Hawaii - HNL - All I can say is to explore and start as early as possible as it can take around 60 days for the animals to be ready to fly. They are very strict. And they have pickup fees and rules that are ridiculous too. And as I write this, my daughter is waiting for the cats to arrive. They have a rule that animals must arrive an hour before closing for processing so check that for delays as well (this flight was delayed).
