Fairly smooth and controllable but not rock solid

For the price if you don't want a solid ball head that will hold a heavy camera mount at any angle this is a good ball head, fairly smooth in operation and shines to be pretty well done. It's not fair to compare this to my $300+ Really Right Stuff BH-40 head, but I'd say it lacks the buttery smoothness and precision of an RRS head. More importantly, you can still move the platform by hand if you firmly tighten the two opposing locking knobs. It will be very comfortable, but still mobile. I observed the same thing with my RRS head after tightening the swing arm to lock the ball in place. The difference is that while I was watching I could still move the platform by hand, it was still relatively easy to turn the PPC lever to further increase the clamping pressure on the ball until it became stationary. With the Andoer head it was simply not possible to tighten the two handles enough to lock the platform in place and one of the main reasons is that the knurling on the handles is done by a rubber ring around the handle, this ring just slides when the handle is tightened to the limit of friction between the handle and the rubber ring. If the head was more expensive I probably wouldn't give it 2 stars, maybe 3. But for this price it's still a very usable ball head once you know its limitations.

Reasonably smooth and controllable, but not rock-solid stability
