SD-PEX50063 ONLY! USB controller works well with PCI passthrough to Linux KVM VMs

TL;DR: SD-PEX50063 works well, SD-PEX50055 does not work. Works great on Ubuntu Linux 17.04 with KVM virtualization with intel_iommu=on. The USB controller works great with PCI passthrough, I've passed it to Linux and Windows VMs and they work great, while I left the SATA controller with disks for the host, which also works great. (I haven't tried passing the SATA controller to the VM.) YMMV, but I'm using two of these cards and each controller on each card gets its own IOMMU group, so I didn't have to do ACS override stupidity to pass , there was an issue when at boot the SATA controller complained that it couldn't see the drive and waited until the user pressed the spacebar to continue. As such, it might not be the best card for remote use unless you have the ability to control the keyboard and screen remotely. If this happens to you, pay close attention to this error as you may have a bad drive. In my case, the drive would disconnect from the controller a few times a week and then start throwing SMART errors. I swapped out the drive and the card no longer complains when booting up and after a few weeks of heavy use it hasn't fallen off at all. Note: I also tried another similar Syba card, SD-PEX50055. The SATA controller does not work with intel_iommu=on.

Pros
  • GOLS certified
Cons
  • Could have chosen a newer model
