Review on πŸ“Ί Affordable SLLEA RCA Composite AV S-Video to VGA Converter Box: Perfect for DVD DVR VCR Monitors by Patrick Hamilton

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Works well on post-SNES consoles.

So here is my offer. I have some old game consoles. I wanted something I use with composite (RCA, red, white, yellow) to pair with my 5 year old 42" Vizio LCD. I originally bought a composite to HDMI adapter hoping it would do everything with one cable from the junction box and tidy things up. I sent it back because the picture quality left a lot to be desired. I bought this knowing I have a Dsub input on my TV and there are adapters to make audio work, so I knew what I was getting into. First I tried my OG ps1 (grey) through a composite, then through this adapter. I can say that it made everything look a lot clearer. Then I tried n64, Gamecube and they all look better (still not great considering the internal resolution, it's NOT an UPSCALER so it's only as good as the input you can put into it). In that respect everything works great. The problem I'm having now, and I should have thought about that before buying, is that anything older than the n64/ps1 era doesn't output 480p, it only outputs 240p. Because it's a dsub connector (which is basically a computer monitor at the moment), very few displays actually output a 240p signal. Normal composite inputs on flat screens do this by upscaling it to 480p, but it looks like crap. Since the TV doesn't post-process this signal from dsub or do anything else (which means it doesn't try to upscale it to 480p), this adapter DOES NOT WORK CORRECTLY with anything that has a 240p signal, as far as I can tell. . I tried snes, nes and genesis. Displayed, but in black and white with a lot of noise. Aside from going the very expensive route of mod the hdmi to 64 on all my consoles or mod the rgb and buy a framemaster or use a retron 5, I'm stuck with the standard composite input for mine old consoles stuck. Although this is not the fault of the adapters. I haven't tried the Svideo or VGA input either, so I can't comment on that. But overall you can get it working for a little quality improvement, it works great.
