Review on 1 TB WD My Book Mac USB 2.0 External Hard Drive for Desktop by Patrick Burton

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Additional Jacksons for "for Mac " number

This is identical to WD MyBook (for Windoze) and contains the non-removable WD SmartWare software for Mac. (Why not download the program instead of forcing the software on new owners?) For those of you who, like me, are outraged at this software getting stuck on your desktop, WD has posted an uninstaller on their website. Follow the instructions carefully and it will go away. You may need to perform a firmware update first. Anyway, this is my second WD drive. The first one I got for Time Machine last year didn't have any of the issues some reviewers wrote about; I couldn't be happier with it. Which prompted me to buy another backup of my HD for Carbon Copy Cloner. Both drives are quiet and efficient. Silence is high on my list. (Both replaced two LaCie drives, which were very nice in terms of design (one stopped working and mysteriously shut itself down, and the other made a humming rumble and stopped working for an hour each time it backed up. That's backup integrity for you. LaCie tech support wasn't helping.) Aside from one lengthy software issue, I recommend the My Book to anyone looking for a quiet, efficient external hard drive, but you can save a few bucks with the regular My Book, as it is not listed anywhere for a Mac.
