Review on 📶 Enhanced NETGEAR WN311B RangeMax Wireless-N PCI Adapter by Kevin Campos

Issues: Computer Components

I purchased this network adapter specifically to receive a Wireless-N signal from a nearby Netgear Wireless-N router. the same brand as the router, it would be compatible with it without any problems. This turned out not to be the case. Pros: It has a great antenna, at least it looks like it should be good. Cons: Difficult to install. It's not receiving a wireless-n signal from a nearby Netgear wireless-n router. I downloaded the driver from the Netgear website along with detailed installation instructions. I followed the instructions but the driver didn't install as suggested. After uninstalling the previous driver and then installing the Netgear driver, the instructions said that after installing the Netgear card and restarting the computer, the instructions would proceed to install the card. That didn't happen. After installing the card, the "Found New Hardware" wizard started and told me that the driver was installed successfully. I tried to find the Wireless-N network but the card didn't find it. It found the Wireless-G network from the router (it's a dual-band router), so I know the NIC was partially up. I've been playing around with the router settings but couldn't figure out how to get the card to accept Wireless-N signals. So I connected the computer to the internet in the wireless G band and restarted the computer. At this point the Netgear driver opened a window where I had to enter additional settings. This aspect of the installation was not described in the instructions. At some point, while working through the instructions in this window, I had a choice: let the Netgear driver handle the internet connection (recommended) or Windows Vista handle the internet connection. I chose to let the Netgear driver handle the connection and I believe this was a bug as there is now a confusing extra icon in the system tray for the internet connection and when the internet connection drops it isn't possible to reconnect to the internet with Vista. While installing the card, due to my confusion about the inconsistency between the instructions and how the driver actually works, I ended up uninstalling the driver software by uninstalling the card, reinstalling the driver software, and then reinstalling the card. Now I think I'll have to do it all over again to get Windows Vista to handle the internet connection. I also need to call Netgear tech support to see if they can help me connect to the Wireless-N signal that the NIC should be detecting. I expect to spend a lot more time completing the installation. I'm not new to installing NICs and configuring routers, so this isn't a complaint from someone who doesn't know what they're doing.
