It does exactly what it says on the tin, effortlessly lifts all the used soil from the decanter into my compost bin. I love french press coffee, but I hate washing coffee residue down the drain at a septic tank. Not great for one day but it adds up. The base and handle are very comfortable to use and beautifully finished. The mesh filter arrangement is also very good; The way the mesh wraps around the feather is much better than my bodum. However. There are no water level markings on the carafe or holder and the lid, knob and siphon are very cheap plastic. Especially the lid and knob. They are thin, die cut with sharp edges, which is unlike any OXO product I've ever purchased. For $40 + tax I expect a better design. My $10 bodum puts that to shame. It works so well and its other qualities mean I won't be returning it and I guess I can only guess the water level but the $44 price tag is too high.
