I used to use whirlpool filters 5 micron, 5 gpm in second stage (with RS6 filter, 30 micron, 10 gpm in first stage) to Getting "little stuff" and This filter (sort of) filtered out the smell better. However, this RS16 unit filters down to 1 micron and lets through twice the volume of this hot tub; This thing definitely runs 10 gpm (at 60 psi of water pressure). It delivers crystal clear water that is almost entirely free of rust (so a water softener shouldn't do that [with all the attendant softener corrosion issues]). I think it's capable of filtering down to 1 micron with such a high flow due to the huge surface area including the top and bottom which are unsealed. In our use it lasts a full six months, although I think after about four it becomes less effective. One caveat: it's too dense for a successful soak; Therefore, there is a lot of air in the medium, which is displaced by the first few tens of liters of water it filters. By then, your cold water will be "carbonated," almost frothy with dissolved air coming out of the faucet. A glass of water is a bit unusual but perfectly safe; it's just air. Take a shower or two and it will go away.
