Should have bought it the first time.

I bought another set of mortar and pestle (different brand, granite, not marble) when it was 40% off making it about $10 cheaper than this one. Then I learned that granite always leaves sand in food, no matter how "seasoned" it may be. This brand's polished granite alternative was the original product I looked at and was advised to try marble as I was told it was the best material for it. It's really beautiful. A double-ended mortar and pestle works great. I grind rice faster and better than my previous experience. My hands felt lighter, I didn't have to strain as much. I made an entire shaker with a pink peppercorn and kosher salt mixture in about 30 minutes just for experimentation. The spoon actually helped a lot in scraping the walls and squeezing out all the dirt. The silicone mat is surprisingly cool. I didn't even need it to hold the grout in place, but I tried it as a lid. To be honest, I didn't expect it to be such a great thing. I really should have bought it the first time and not wasted so much time (and rice). I've seen pictures of a broken tappet and it made me nervous that I'd broken mine too much so can't comment on durability. It seems like it could destroy the Nissan as I saw someone say about their car in another comment. In the event of such a turn, I will edit this review accordingly. I read in a comment that someone had fluid issues and I had a similar experience. I put the peppercorns in the larger part of the mortar and they formed a peppery liquid which the pestle went through, so I switched it to the other side and ended up like this. The smaller side did a great job with that. It wasn't a bad experience - I just didn't know peppercorns could do that or how to use it, but it went well. It took me a few years to look back on this product before I finally got my hands on it and I'm glad I did.
