We do NOT routinely tie our dog (fenced yard) but use this tie when we would like one of our dogs to be in the front yard with us while we are in the Gardening or sitting on the porch talking to the neighbors so our dog is almost always supervised on a tie unless we go in to get something quick. This tie is IDEAL for tying a strong 100lb male German Shepherd. Other nylon tie products are fine, but if you have a chewer (or a man intent on reaching a woman in heat) then I highly recommend using a zip tie. Keep in mind that when mating a female in heat, you are more likely to have puppies if there is an intact male nearby.
