Yes, they are smaller than we expected, they will be thrown away. At home I use a large serving spoon so it took me a minute to realize the size. The size is about 2 tablespoons. I used them for a family picnic and they were perfect for serving just the right amount. As far as heavy meals go, these spoons have handled potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans, anything we've scooped up with these spoons. And NONE of these broke while shoveling, I was a bit worried about that. When the picnic was over I just threw them in the trash, well the ones that could, I think my sister in law grabbed them to wash and use again. So twice saved I think.
