They work no better (and possibly worse) than an old-school feather duster: they only cling to the largest particles, kicking up a cloud of fine dust and pet hair that floats through the air and inevitably re- coats your fresh, poorly dusted surface. However, unlike old rags, they are not even meant to last forever. I haven't tried any branded towels, but I can attest that while microfiber towels aren't very good at removing dust, they are at least versatile and reusable.
