Gerbils like it, don't hold sand very long

I bought this pet bath so our gerbils could roll in the sand to clean themselves. My two gerbils can and will occasionally hit it at the same time, but it's really meant for one at a time. I can leave that in their tank and they still prefer to sleep in their Carefresh litter box than in that gerbil bath (I was afraid they might declare if I left that in their cage but that doesn't seem to be the problem). Problem). My problem with the tub is that within minutes of me placing the tub in my cage, my gerbils are tumbling in like crazy little things and throwing all their bath sand into their bedding. They roll around in the sand once or twice, desperately trying to burrow in, but it doesn't make them look particularly clean, especially as the more dominant of my two gerbils seems intent on getting all the sand out before the less dominant one can even get in . in. I don't know if there is a better design that makes it harder to tread sand and results in better bathing, or if it's just the nature of gerbils, but I don't know. I feel like it has really made my gerbils a lot cleaner. An unexpected benefit is that the shy gerbil jumps into the tub when my 7 year old tries to pick it up. Then my 7 year old can just take the tub out of the cage and the gerbil let my daughter play with it. So it works well as a sort of gerbil lift. I think overall I would buy it again and we still use it, we're just still looking for a way to help our gerbils stay clean.

Pros
  • Great for a small house
Cons
  • Hard to say
