a decent start for a true pipe grinder

This grinder would not work well with my Milwaukee 2981-20. Clamp is weak, doesn't hold case well - basically a YouTube video of an accident in progress. There is no documentation or instructions. The real question was: Can I get it to work? The main problem was reliable and secure attachment to the head of the mill. Looking at the Milwaukee Guard's protection, it's clear that their engineers did an excellent job on the binding. Not only did it lock without tools, the grinder also had a pin lock to lock the guard in multiple positions. I bought a genuine Milwaukee replacement steel guard ($12) and cut it open. I just wanted a steel collar that had all the locking and geometry adjustments. I cut the snap ring into a round piece that looked like a large washer that had exactly what I needed. I cleaned the snap ring and started figuring out how to weld it to the pipe grinder. As it turned out, the inside diameter of the slip ring was a perfect match for the Milwaukee snap ring. I just had to cut off the ears of the abrasive cuff. I welded the grinder clamp flange to the Milwaukee retaining ring. With some sanding and spray paint it now looks like it used to. I even upgraded the handle attachment point with an M10-1.50 bolt. Now the Milwaukee grip fits perfectly. The last thing to do is straighten the belt. I ended up creating a stack of washers to create a set of drive wheels. You can then adjust the idler wheels by sliding the shims provided - if you look closely you'll notice that the inner and outer shims are different thicknesses. Someone thought about it. Sorry for the long post. I hope you find some value in it. This unit is now performing at a level beyond what I ever expected. It took some work to be sure, but the main parts are there.
