I was torn between using a large wool brush and a sponge. Top layer made of acrylic. The paint (I bought it separately) came with a small wool brush, which proved extremely useful later in the project. If you have small areas it can become difficult to control the sponge. The description of the sponge states that it does not "soak up" the paint, but "stays on the surface". Most of the color gets on the skin during use. I found it lighter and less dense than I expected. But I'm no foam expert. It was initially a bit difficult to control the initial amount of dye applied. I would recommend testing a little on a scrap or inconspicuous part of your item to get a feel for it. The color applies very well in large areas, a bit difficult to control in smaller areas (around pockets, zip flaps, cuffs). Stains - otherwise you'll crush the dye-soaked sponge in hard-to-reach areas that can get too saturated/dirty. This applicator was excellent and I would buy again for future projects. The sponge also survived the project and acetone cleaning without falling apart or tearing.
