The first one I used started to heat up right around the JST connector (actually I could smell it) and the print ended up failing, indicating thermal runaway. The plug was actually hotter than the wire next to the cartridge heater. Looking at the specs of the JST connector used, it appears to be SMR-02V-B or something similar. The data sheet for this connector states that it is only rated for 3 amps. These cartridge heaters are rated at 40W. For a 12 volt printer, this means that at maximum load the heater will draw a current of 3.33 amps (watts = amps * volts -> 40 watts/12 volts = 3.3333 Amp). This is higher than the maximum 3 amp rating that the connector is rated for. I got some good prints from the first one before it failed, but the fact that it's using an out-of-spec connector doesn't bode well.
