Digital calipers used as depth gauges are actually very accurate, but they have to be perfectly vertical. This gives you a lot more repeatable measurements, and repeatability and accuracy go hand in hand! Now it's perfect. The depth mic is still a must-have tool for sub-0.001" or even sub-0.003" measurements, but it works for everything else! Just make sure you dress it up right! Position the caliper vertically to check depth on a flat surface (or granite if available) and install when it bottoms. Make sure the fixed side opposite the set screw is fully seated on the calipers. Tighten the set screw and install the connection to block 123 or calibration block. That's it, it takes about 30 seconds. .
