I have been using a similar item on an iron pan for many years. It was just part of the chain. The silicone sponge allows for slightly better penetration into the grooves and feels better on the hand. Don't be afraid to use water when cleaning the pan, simply wipe it down with a cloth when you're done and take the extra step of setting it on low heat to dry.
