When we were looking for a bike trailer for dogs, I turned to the Burley line of products first because I had previously had their Nomad cargo trailer. I was impressed with the design and quality of this trailer so I knew this Tail Wagon would be no exception. Burley's aren't cheap, but in my experience you always get what you pay for with their products. However, I like to shop. A friend at my local bike shop suggested I look at a few different lines of products that also make dog trailers and they were actually a lot cheaper, but the reviews were everywhere - plus I just didn't care about the looks. Offers from other brands. After all, I bit the bullet for Burley and couldn't be happier. Burley construction is characteristically premium. All you have to do right out of the box is lift the frame, attach the quick release wheels, attach the hitch and you're good to go. Mine was on my bike just 20 minutes after first opening the box. There is ample ventilation for your dog and the bottom floor is hard and removable for cleaning. Flip up clear vinyl covers for the front and rear windows are also good. The side rails are rigid and reinforced with dowels to keep your dog from leaning on the sides and material rubbing against the wheels. I like mudguards that prevent the trailer from catching too hard on obstacles. The tailgate has two different configurations for your dog's safety. An option allows you to leave the tailgate attached and allows for quicker entry and exit, but allows smaller dogs to squeeze through the opening. Our dog did it for the first time in the trailer. Luckily Burleigh anticipated this and developed a second option where you attach the tailgate to the outside of the main cover, preventing the dog from escaping through the back. The only downside is that it only takes a few seconds to get the dog in and out this way. Size wise we have a 25 lb mini Aussie and the interior of the trailer is perfect for him. I would say this trailer would be fine for dogs up to 40 pounds, but I feel it would be too small and cramped for dogs with withers (shoulders) much more than 18 inches. This is because the top is tapered at the front and back, so only a very small portion of the interior reaches full height. Our other dog who weighs 75 pounds and is about 22 inches tall would definitely NOT fit in this trailer. I would say that dogs the size of an average border collie would be the maximum size for this. Dogs the size of a Lab or German Shepherd would probably be too big for this trailer. If you have a large dog, you may want to consider a different trailer or an entirely different option. The only issues I have with this trailer are the small accessories that come with it, not those that are sold separately. First off, the owner's manual says a flashing light and bracket are included, but I didn't actually have any. not sure why not. Maybe it was just a mistake in packaging. Also included is a safety flag (which I think is a good thing if you don't mind) and a detachable handle if you put the trailer in sidecar mode. The inclusion of that large, cumbersome handle assembly confuses me because you still have to order the small front wheel separately if you want to take advantage of this option. Without that little wheel for the front of the hitch, the handle assembly is useless. BURLEY'S SUGGESTION: Why not include a footrest instead of a stroller handle? As a practical accessory, it makes a lot more sense to me if you include it. The stand definitely comes in handy when introducing your dog to the trailer and want to teach him to get in and out on command. Otherwise, you must either place the front end on a firm, elevated surface or attach it to the bike. If you have a dog who is completely unfamiliar with this sort of thing, an unstable trailer or one that can move around while attached to a bike can affect their comfort in the trailer.
