I bought these shorts for mountain biking, of course! They are light, comfortable and ride well. I bought the shorts with an insert that also helps when I saddle up for more than a fast ride. I'm not the type to wear knee pads, just old fashioned Crash n Joe, no Red Bull Rampage stuff for me, but I think knee pads would go well with these shorts if you're more protected than me. The only functional pockets are the two zippered pockets, which you usually put your hands in before the shorts. I keep my extra stuff in my small backpack/hydration pack to fit me. If you need more pockets, look for other shorts. I would go with them again. Very comfortable.
