I like the gray color for general use. White or black may be better for your specific application. All 8 batteries were fully charged upon arrival, the devices were well packed and showed no signs of damage. These leak detectors draw about 53 microamps in normal standby mode. The Rayovac AL9V-6 Ultra Pro Alkaline 9V battery should last around 1.5 years at this rate. I cleaned the PCB flux with 91% alcohol to reduce power consumption but it didn't work. It has a low voltage warning that will beep and light up an LED mounted just below the buzzer grille. The one I tested started warning at around 6.75V. 100 dB at 1 foot from the grid. This can be increased to approx. 102dB if you drill a 1/4" diameter hole in the center of the back of the grille. That's about 108dB with the cover fully removed. I have 8 units at home and more on the road, total 11 units planned I've converted 3 to run from a 12V transformer as they are close to an outlet.The internal IC is rated for an absolute maximum of 20V (although not recommended) so I expect that no problems at 12v, however a 9v transformer can use this if you are concerned. I believe you can safely connect them from an 8v to 14v power supply. It is possible to put the sensor wires through To lengthen solder extensions if required for a specific application.with multiple modification options if you are willing to do so ONE YEAR UPDATE: Batteries lasted almost exactly a year!Died in 3 units within a few days of each other.This w aren cheap batteries that came with the units. I am very satisfied with the battery life. UPDATE YEAR 1.5: Two of the units stopped working. Didn't try to fix them as it was cheap enough to replace. I changed the star rating from 5 to 4 stars. 2 YEARS UPDATE: 4 out of 8 failed completely for me, no longer satisfied.
