UPDATE: 4 months later, raccoons keep breaking in!

**UPDATE 4 months later*** So much for raccoon protection! I saw with my own eyes how they broke down the door, ransacked our porch and terrorized the cats. Now I need to buy another door that reads microchips both ways so raccoons can't just lift the door with their tiny claws. I didn't know when I bought this IC door that it only reads ICs in one direction, it's not clear in the description. Another technique that will end up in a landfill. What a waste. * It took our indoor and outdoor cats about two weeks to get used to this door that we built into our glazed patio door. At first they were startled by a loud click, but now for them it is a signal that the door is not locked and they wait for the sound to slam the door shut. One of our cats pushes it with his paw, the other just sticks his head in. Here's how we trained them: first we held the valve open for a few days, then opened both sides for a few more days bribing them with treats to get used to squeezing the valve. Then we went to the microchip version and helped them in by sticking their heads in the tunnel, waiting for a click and opening the gate for them. It took them about a week to master the unlock system. It was a process but we're so glad we did it. Before, when we had to go out of town for a few days, they were kept indoors and checked daily by the nanny. They were very nervous about being locked inside and being sprayed all over our furniture. But we couldn't just leave the food outside or it would attract all the homeless animals and raccoons. Now we can travel up to 2 weeks with the automatic feeder and water dispenser on the porch. Cats are free to roam throughout the day and return to a safe, dry place with food and water that only they have access to. We also installed a pet camera to check every day in case something goes wrong. Happy kittens and happier owners. Note upfront that the door READS ONLY ON ONE SIDE, meaning cats can always get out freely, but they must unlock the door to enter (or vice versa if you put the door on the other side). That's fine for our needs, but not when you need to be selective about keeping a few cats indoors.
