Review on Cotton Knitting Exclusive Patterns Designers by Morgan Gilmore

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Some intriguing sweater designs.

I received this out of print book based on a review from a Revain.com customer. If you're one of those knitters who live in temperate climates where wool sweaters are too heavy most of the time, I'll definitely try to find an inexpensive edition of this book. What I liked most about the book is that there are two or three VERY unusual sweaters, including one that I really liked, that are knit in one piece, including front, back and cap sleeves - all what remains to be done after knitting is to sew side seams. What disappointed me about the book is the lack of detail on how cotton knitting differs from wool knitting. Wool is a popular choice of knitters because wool yarn naturally has a natural elasticity unlike cotton yarn, although as a natural fiber it still has some elasticity. There's also the issue of testing samples for shrinkage, colorfastness, blocking, laundering and care of cotton jerseys, which the book doesn't detail - also disappointing. The book is essentially a gallery of sweater designs complete with patterns, step-by-step knitting instructions, line art, and color charts. Sweaters are photographed on professional models. Personally, I found the colors used and the knitting patterns too bright and flashy, but that can easily be adjusted to personal taste. Close-ups of pattern patterns are very good and help the knitter. Although the book doesn't mention it, cotton knitting, while intricate, can be very beautiful in some designs. Some lace patterns work quite well with cotton, although I've found that cotton yarn doesn't hold up very well on very intricate twine stitches - it tends to fray and looks frayed instantly. I would also like the book to explain the differences between cotton yarns such as: B. mercerized and non-mercerized. Given that there are few books for cotton knitters out there, I think this book is worth your time and attention.
