It doesn't seem to weaken the signal.

In my career as an instrumenter I have seen that copper wires running between buildings are vulnerable to lightning. Only gas tubes are really effective for this and don't load the signal very much. If like me you're wondering if they work fine, here's my setup, which works fine on 100MB: outbuildings. The cable has been in the ground for about 7 years but has not been used for Ethernet before. There is a block 66 at each end. I have tried unsuccessfully to put RJ45 on an underground cable but it was not possible, the cable is too thick. I know 66 blocks shouldn't be used for 100MB, but this works fine. A short category 5e cable leads to the surge arrester. Make sure the DIN rail is properly grounded.
