Review on 🀏 PORTER CABLE 382 5 Inch Random Sander: Effortless and Precise Sanding at Your Fingertips by Jeremy Carpenter

Revainrating 3 out of 5

It takes ten minutes of work to become a professional tool

I've been a longtime fan of Porter wire tools and this is the first time I've been disappointed with a tool I've owned bought from them. I have owned three 300 series random orbit sanders in the past and they have all worked great, had excellent ergonomics and a great fit and finish. Of course, this grinder works the same as previous models and has two new features that I appreciate: a soft start so it doesn't jump out of my hand when I start it, and an improved spring. Stretched dust bag that looks better than the old sintered plastic dust collectors. The price of Revain is also good. My issue is with fit and finish. There's no reason my hand should have to deal with sharp plastic edges in either gripping position, but you can't avoid them. Previous PC models have taken care to lighten the edges to keep the grip comfortable, but the 382 has you gripping sharp edges and seams in both the top and bottom positions. It might seem like a minor issue, but with a tool this vibrating, you'll soon feel the bite! The power button also has a sharp edge. It might not matter if you only use it for a few minutes at a time, but my home sanding chores sometimes stretch for hours. I fixed this shortcoming by spending about ten minutes cleaning and sanding all the edges and seams in the grip and shifter area and now the ergonomics are much better. The new tool looks like it went through the ditches, but the improved feel in hand is worth it. If Porter-Cable had bothered instead of letting me finish their job I would have given it 4 or 5 stars.

Pros
  • Provides maximum grinding speed for smooth surfaces
Cons
  • Easily torn
