I bought this for my small but noisy chihuahua to use on walks around the neighborhood. She has a history of barking at other dogs and people on walks. It was awkward. There are many settings for this, including sound, vibration and shock. I didn't and didn't want to shock her, but the sound alone stopped her from barking. The vibrate mode kicks in if she keeps barking after the sound is turned off, and it's happened a couple of times, but now when we take her for a walk without it, she barks less. I'm trying to remember. The front is a little big for a small dog but that doesn't stop me from using it. It did what I bought it for, my walks with my dog are so much more enjoyable!
