I was using a charcoal filter and within a week the filters on my CPAP machine became clogged with what appeared to be black soot within 6 hours one night. Racking my brains to figure out what was causing this, I concluded that it could be the activated carbon filter in my air purifier that was the only black thing in my room. I opened my air purifier and the filter was blackish so I threw it away with the carbon filter and wiped the unit down with sanitary napkins and they turned black too. I installed a new filter and a non-charcoal filter and have had no problems since. Now I'm wondering what the breath from all that black stuff that was in the air in my room could have done to my lungs. It wasn't visible in the air, but the filters collected a lot of it in 6 hours. I'm worried about it.
