Smell: Some reviews say it has a strong odor and you can smell it when you pump it up or apply it. It fills a space, like a bedroom or especially a bathroom, while you apply it and for a short time. But not super intense or overwhelming for your senses. However, after it settles down, the smell in the room really dissipates and your skin no longer smells like lavender/mint. I was afraid you would smell like peppermint. You won't have any problems with the overpowering smell. Soothing: My wife said it was quite relaxing because of the smell, but I suspect it has something to do with the massage as well. However, this may be due to over-confidence or lack of her skills as a masseuse. It's lavender, though, so it's very much to be expected. Pain Relief: Can't speak to it yet, no pain to test. Residue: I will say that the oil is a little "dry" after a little massage. That's good, because unlike lotions, which rub in very quickly, this oil allows you to massage your skin for a while before needing to apply another dose of oil. The downside is that he lingered for a while after that. I didn't feel like I could massage it in to the point where my skin feels dry. So it's a coin toss, depending on your preference. Overall I think this is a great purchase.
