Didn't work or worked intermittently

Batteries installed and turned on. The power indicator came on and the device did not detect any human presence or display temperature readings. While I was holding it, it recorded my temperature 2 times. Then nothing. I read the instructions and followed them to T. Noticed the specs say 100cm and the instructions say 20cm. Confusing to say the least.
