I have been doing electrical work for many years. I have used this model tester many times, this is a device for professional electricians to pre-test the circuit. The reason I bought a new one (there is one in my tool box) was because I was out of town for work and my wife had a dead outlet. No switches, dials, batteries, etc. and virtually shockproof. I sent her this tester to test the circuit with her, quite successfully for a layman. Another reason I chose this unit over a $10 tester with an indicator light or a $20 multimeter was that it was on a 240v circuit, so I had to make sure it was really 240 and was not just a leg. Another reason this tester is good is the somewhat archaic voltage display. It uses an electromagnet to move the 'needle' on the scale, which draws much more current than a neon light or electronic meter, so it isn't fooled by weak current leaks found in a 'real' meter false positive or indicator light. The solenoid also "buzzes" so you can "feel" an indicator where you may not see it. And it's solid, mine is about 15 years old, a bit shabby but sturdy. I'm not sure if they still do, but Ideal had a lifetime warranty on their review units.
