Mercon V is the most common type of Ford Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) used in earlier Ford models and is very similar to Dexron III. Painted red for leak detection. This is a fully synthetic ATF. Motorcraft MERCON V (actually a Roman numeral 5, not "V" as many people think) is a premium automatic transmission fluid. Developed and recommended by Ford Motor Company for use in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles requiring MERCON V or older MERCON fluids. I did a little research and found that FORD no longer makes MERCON as stated in the 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid Owner's Manual and a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) was issued that listed "MERCON V" as a transmission fluid replacement is. Ford (TSB) 06/14/04 states that Mercon "V" is to replace the original Mercon fluid. The car uses 5.3 liters (5.0L) and this 5 liter jug is perfect for replacing the factory fluid. Please note: Attention! Do not use this in transfer cases. or put them in the PTU. Using gear oils that do not meet the recommended specifications can cause internal damage to the gearbox. DO NOT use Motorcraft MERCON CVT (Blue) ATF on 2006 Ford Escape Hybrids. You must use the "RED" colored liquid. This 2006 Ford Escape Hybrid uses only the previous generation factory installed Motorcraft MERCON ATF (not available) and can be replaced with the new Mercon V (product reviewed here).
