I have a very thick white coating on the outside of the aquarium filter. I ended up pouring this product into a bowl and wetting the filter and it loosened the buildup to the point where it would come off after cleaning with steel wool, but it certainly wasn't a miracle cure. I've also tried it on deposits that have formed from filter spatter on the painted wall behind my tank. I think it helped a bit, but again no big miracles.
