Harmful but necessary to comply with the law

Whistle and fold. Silicone didn't eliminate the whistle. The "Just mind it, it's a Jeep" crowd won't care because it's not that loud. Another disadvantage of silicone grout is that you can't stack them without breaking the seal. Some might not care, but it's a lot easier to garage the Jeep in the rain than to cover it with a tarpaulin. These mirrors protrude farther than normal mirrors and must be folded, so a silicone joint would be very tedious and expensive. I believe no tightening torque will keep these mirrors from folding at speeds in excess of 50mph. The silicone solution gets the speed to around 60mph, which doesn't help as driving over 50mph always means I'll get at least 70mph. Where I live there aren't many roads where speeds exceed a few hundred feet. I've tried many tightening methods but it always frizzes quickly. The last problem is rust. The hardware started rusting after about 6 months and this caused some streaks which I quickly removed to avoid staining. Rust and constant flapping has made the mirror usable after 3 years for me just to comply with the law by having a side view, although I can't use it without stretching out my hand. The rate at which the driver's side mirror folds is now around 35mph because when the passenger side folds, it doesn't slide back until I stop (and hence the rusty teeth aren't worn out).
