Review on πŸ”Œ Cable Matters SuperSpeed USB 3.0 to HDMI Adapter (Black) - Stream Windows up to 1440p by Runbi Alvarez

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Currently the only USB3-to-HDMI device worth the money - at least for Mac users.

The first one I ordered was Dead On Priority. I sent it back and ordered a replacement. The replacement works. and it is such a well made product that I give it 5 stars even though the first device was DOA. It's one of three USB HDMI devices I've reviewed; One was from Etekcity (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00F8OPKLW) and produced a decent picture, but I couldn't get any sound through the HDMI output. StarTech.com (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00612ZPQA) was second and it handled the audio well, but the video in Startech dropped every few seconds; he couldn't handle the bandwidth. Useful as a screen supplement for programming or spreadsheets, but useless for full-screen video viewing. But when I plugged this unit into a USB3 port on my Mac Pro (Mac Pro with a black barrel) in late 2013, I not only got a crisp HD home theater projector, I also got some kind of 5.1 output over HDMI, although I didn't did. have no more than two speakers (see below). In the Mac's Audio Midi Setup app (the icon looks like a small piano keyboard), I can select "USB3 to HDMI" - a choice I haven't seen on any of the competing devices. And when I selected it, I was presented with six (!) volume controls for all 5.1 channels. And the sound comes from the Mac via this device, via an HDMI cable, is converted to optical SPDIF with the Monoprice box, gets to the home theater via an optical channel and is decoded there in perfect sound without hum. After 8 months of fiddling, my AV setup is finally doing what I want. This part was the missing part. Four sources (two Mac Pros from different years, a PS/3 and a HDMI to home theater cable I can connect to my laptop with this beauty: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DOZHL82 ) go into http://www.amazon.com/Monoprice-105557-Toslink-Digital-Coaxial/dp/B003L14WB8 and its output goes to my Epson projector as HDMI. But the sound is intercepted by the selected HDMI and sent via fiber optic cable to the cinema, where http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Optical-Analog-Converter-Adapter/dp/B005DIRI6I decodes it into active speakers. The tiny infrared remote control for the Monoprice box lets me choose from one of my four sources; the sound is selected with . The mute button works on all four channels. And I have reason to believe that if I had a 5.1 sound system I could make it work too.

Pros
  • Premium HDMI to USB Adapter uses an available USB port on your computer to connect an HDMI HDTV, monitor or projector; USB HDMI adapter adds extra display When other video ports are busy on your computer
Cons
  • Not reliable
