Review on Ersa RDS ๐ŸŒก๏ธ 80 Electronic Temperature Control System by Ryan Barton

Performance well above its price - the real deal.

I use a soldering iron most of the day. So I've had some very good soldering stations over the years. I appreciate the serious approach of the RDS 80. Due to the rather large transformer, it is heavy for its size. The soldering station is easy to set up. However, if needed, the guide is comprehensive and well-written. Other manufacturers could learn a lot from the Kurtz Ersa instructions (all instructions are very well written). Storage is easy to set up with an optional programmable standby temperature and timer, as well as a programmable auto-off timer. It includes a few features that my other soldering stations don't have, most of which cost a lot more than the RDS 80. The features are nice, but how does it work? Very good. Works like a more expensive soldering station. The iron has very good heat recovery and a wide range of tips and geometries. The tips are very well made and I was surprised at how long they last. I love how the tips attach to the heating element and provide a solid mechanical connection. My only criticism is the PVC cord that connects the iron to the power supply. Despite the long cable length, there is a lack of flexibility. Also, I would like the display to be backlit or sidelit. Admittedly my complaints are minor and not a deal breaker. I prefer the RDS 80 to my other soldering stations. In all honesty, without the PVC cable that connects to the iron, I would have gone with the RDS 80 over the i-CON Nano. I would definitely put the RDS 80 at the top of my list of soldering stations under $150. The iron is light and fits well in the hand. The station heats up quickly and has very good heat recovery. It works very well with a solid construction. The tips are reasonably priced, exceptionally well made and last much longer than I expected. This is a great soldering station for serious hobbyists, technicians, or even small productions. Last but not least, Kurtz Ersa's excellent customer support with quick and professional answers should you ever need it.
