Review on Western Digital 10TB Internal Drive by Orlando Mohr

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Poor warranty/RMA support

I ordered 3 x 6TB WD Red Plus NAS drives during a sale in June. Of the 3 I ordered, 2 installed successfully with no issues. When I tried to install the latest HD, the plastic surrounding the end of the SATA connector crumbled, rendering the SATA connector unusable. Since I didn't have a return period, I sent the drive back to WD for service/warranty. Instead of providing customer support, WD stated that the drive was (obviously) damaged and advised that it could: 1. Ship the drive back to me at my expense2. Erase Disk I don't agree with any of these options, so I tried contacting them. I have not been able to contact anyone over the phone and my experience with them has led me to believe that they set up their phone support systems this way on purpose. When calling, it is possible to contact someone via live chat support (if you are using a mobile smartphone). I was able to speak to the representative but as this is a different department their powers are limited. I have asked that the repressive authorities have a member of the right team contact me as soon as possible as I wanted to discuss the disc before they cancel it. Also, I even pointed this out on their RMA portal with a comment like this. They didn't call me - they didn't answer on the support portal. Instead, I received an email that despite my protestations, the drive was indeed defective. This is my first experience with a manufacturer that doesn't endorse their products in any way and doesn't value their customers. Because a manufacturer with a decent warranty would at least send the device (which they can't service or repair) back to their customers for pennies - as was the case with my Gigabyte graphics card. A company that cares about its customers should have available support numbers and systems that customers can use to resolve their issues with a company representative. In short, Western Digital is not responsible for its products and doesn't care about its customers. I bought 8 WD hard drives this year. And I will avoid them for anything storage related in the future, including SSD drives.

Pros
  • Cool
Cons
  • Insanely slow
