The alligator clips look pretty flimsy and cheap, but they do the job. The silicone grips on the clips are not only flimsy (which also makes them a bit sharp around the edges), but EXTREMELY smooth. to the point where I can't use them at all to open the alligator clip. Holding the clip in your hand and squeezing the guard gives you the added bonus of creating a short-range throwing weapon, as some of the crocodile skin clip will "splash" out of the silicone guard and your fingers. That being said, if you have heat shrink tubing, an excellent replacement. I cut off the silicone guards and replaced them with heat shrink tubing. But now I can do it all myself
