Review on Blue Ox BX1118 Base Plate by Hikeboy Ramey

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Good kit except using blind bolts instead of nuts on the wire.

First I would like to thank the other reviewers as they helped me feel like this would be a relatively easy install on my 2001 Jeep Wrangler Sport. I installed a similar one on a Honda CRV about 10 years ago and it wants good, never had a problem in all the years of towing it behind my camper van. I'm 78 now so it's not as easy as other hot reviewers. So this review is for seniors. I installed it myself in my garage, on my back most of the time, and wish my jeep was on a lift. This is a 5 star kit for a young man, but it is a 4 star kit for an old man. The loss of one star relates to these 4 nuts with a long wire. The holes used on the bottom of the frame holes aren't too bad, but the holes on the side of the frame were extremely difficult to align as I was lying on my back on the floor trying to look into the drilled holes on the frame. side of the frame. If I were to do this again I would buy some blind bolts from Abrafast, 3/8 diameter, 2-1/2" long instead of nut plates, they're only about $2.50 each. I recommend Blue Ox, plugs making it standard for these kits. Two additional points: the manual says that someone must hold the steering assembly while you remove the three long bolts.Since I was doing this alone, I found that pulling out the middle long bolt and inserting it a 3/8" wood dowel in place of the screw worked just fine. This will hold the steering box in place when the other two long bolts are removed. With the base mounted and the two long bolts replaced, the wooden dowel can simply be removed and the third long bolt replaced. Also, my hand drill with the bit was too long to drill the two side holes in the frame, so I had to rent an angled hand drill to drill those two holes. You may also need.
