Review on πŸ”Œ Yahboom Raspberry Programmable Electronics: Unleash the Power of Raspberry Pi by Melanie Gehrke

Complexity and some security issues

I already know the Raspberry Pi so I was hoping the Yahboom robot kit would be perfect for teaching kids. Cons: 1. The instructions are confusing or incomplete. You have to spend time looking at different articles on our YouTube on the web to finally put them together. Only the base is aluminum. The top plate is made of plastic. The one we received arrived broken.3. The Arduino board we received had bent pins. Luckily, Revane made a quick exchange4. You need to manually install the app on your Android phone. The app is NOT in the Google Store. You must "bypass" your phone's security to install an uncertified app. This is a huge potential security hole. You don't get the app's source code, so you need to be sure that the app isn't doing anything else on your phone. They also offer an app for Windows. Again, no source code, so a potential security hole.6. I still haven't figured out how to use WiFi and Bluetooth live video streaming at the same time. Supposedly everything can be controlled via WLAN, but there are no instructions.7. Batteries don't last long. Maybe 30 minutes, but it takes a long time to charge. For more than 4 hours.8. The connection via Bluetooth is often difficult. You almost need your phone to touch the Bluetooth receiver on the Board9. For those with Apple, there is no IOS app. What's good: 1. I used an old Android phone and installed the app (bypassing security). This works very well. You need to fine tune the servos.2. It definitely got the kids excited, even if it caused a lot of frustration (not in a good way). The kids want to keep it, but the security issues really bother me.

Pros
  • Great choice
Cons
  • There are downsides
