I bought this for my mother but I also bought a set for myself to test. They are listed as oil - I don't think so. Used to more expensive professional pens, they react on paper like wax-based pens. Don't be fooled into thinking they're too soft to apply intense color. However, these pens certainly do a decent job. You can mix colors and get a good effect, and the variety of colors is good. For the price I would say this is a good pen. I don't know how colorfast they are for art made with the intention of staying like a painting, so I won't be adding them to my professional collection for that reason. But for general use - a good buy. The included little coloring book for adults is very nice. It was very beautiful.
