Review on πŸ“Ά TP-Link TL-WR340G 54Mbps 4-Port Wireless Router: Reliable and High-Speed Internet Connectivity by Esvin Hopuhnopuhlis

Revainrating 5 out of 5

UPDATE - the first died after a month, the second works fine

UPDATE 7/29/11 - the second still works. I must have been given a lemon for the first time. I'm increasing my rating to five stars. UPDATE 03/26/11. The Netgear router I bought also gave me problems. It did not allow access to the settings page after a reboot. Tried a factory reset, didn't help. It still works, but I've never installed a security system on it and I don't want all my neighbors to intercept my wireless signal, so I bought another TP-Link device. Two weeks later it's still working great. I hope this one lasts longer than a month. I've come to the conclusion that wireless routers are imperfect technology and prone to failure. I have upgraded this router to a three star average and if it lasts more than a few months I will upgrade it some more. UPDATE 3/6/11. This router stopped working a few days ago and somehow tricked Windows into thinking the downstream modem was the problem. I had access to my own network, but not the internet, and the Windows 7 troubleshooter suggested resetting the modem. The owner was out of town for the weekend so that wasn't an option. I connected the Cat5 cable that comes with my apartment directly to my computer and I have internet. I go back through the router, there is no internet. I'm sure the tech support will be fine as I've seen many people here commenting good experiences with them, but I don't have the time or patience to wait for a replacement and I'll just call it that a seventeen dollar waste. I'm going to Best Buy to get a Netgear or Linksys router now. INITIAL REVIEW - We moved to an apartment that has free high speed internet, but only one ethernet jack comes into the apartment and the WiFi in the building is terrible. I needed a wireless access point and this was the perfect solution (for those who use it, don't worry about the installation CD, just google "configure the TP-Link router as an access point" and you will find some easy steps). It worked great, has great speed and was very easy to set up. Last night we put him through the most serious scrutiny he's ever received from us when I read Facebook stuff on my laptop while watching a Netflix movie on Wii (both wireless) and my wife in the other room a few watched youtube videos. . via a Category 5 connection. The connection was not lost on any of the three systems. In our last apartment, our roommate had a Netgear WiFi router and we had buffering issues with Netflix all the time, so that's a big improvement. I had low expectations due to the low price and so far it has far exceeded those low expectations. I'm so glad I didn't pay 3 or 4 times as much for a famous brand.
