It's a small block of plastic but works well so far. Got by the reviews and it was better than most. I cut the bread in half, then put each half in a slicer and cut one slice at a time. After each slice, you need to take out the uncut loaf and take out the slice of bread. It takes a little while but each piece is cut the same way and I am able to get 7 pieces of bread out of each half of the loaf. It has a plastic insert that is adjustable for 4 different bread thicknesses. I have a very sharp serrated knife that cuts clean. Overall I'm happy with this purchase and if it broke I would buy it again if it was still in stock. I hand wash it and clean it right away so there is less damage.
