The moving parts themselves are not magnetic. They do not attract or repel and will not adhere to any steel surface. There is no attraction or adhesion between the pieces and unfortunately with a very weakly magnetized playing surface. As a travel game, the set is completely useless. With the slightest jolt, the pieces slide off the board or deviate from the ideal height. I can understand the logic of creating a set with a magnetized playing surface and figures with a ferromagnetic core. It is inherently safer and children who swallow two or more pieces will not suffer intestinal injuries. Not to mention the cheaper production. BUT, this is an example of security, not functionality. IF you're looking for a playset that kids can play in a moving vehicle, this isn't for you. Might suit a couple of paralyzed OCD pedants playing on a seismically isolated tabletop. In addition, in just a few minutes you can explore the game without gravity, a thin sheet of polyethylene that acts as a transparent protection between the game pieces and the running game. The circuits are horribly scratched and dented. A thin sheet of polycarbonate would be a hundred times better.
