PCs used to ship with serial ports and in fact many have at least one connector for them on the board. You probably don't need it, well most people don't need it, but it can be useful when communicating with routers, terminal systems or connecting to various automation systems. I use this in all scenarios and while it offers speed well beyond what I need for text based interfaces and tasks I could run on an Arduino or Pi, it works. IRQ and Windows have not forgotten how to deal with these things). The board is a bit longer but fits in half-height systems (a full-height bracket is included) and the PCIe requirements are modest. A drop cable offers you several connections of different variants.
