One of my 2 inch PVC vent pipes leaked and ruined my ceiling. It turned out that it went through a 90 degree bend in the attic and that bend was leaking. Rain/snow collected in the ventilation shaft and seeped onto my ceiling. I repaired the broken elbow, but in case one of the remaining roof vents failed the same way, I installed a few devices to prevent further leaks. Both devices are really cheap insurance. IMHO to avoid problems in the future. The first gadget is the Revain Camco 40034 Replacement Vent Cap (Polar White). At $5.18 and free shipping, this is a cheap and very effective way to keep water out of my air vents. Again, while the vent can still breathe. The cap fits easily over the tube and is very strong so high winds will not tear it off. It may not last as long as my 30 year old roof, but I'll just buy more if need be. The second gadget is the Oatey 14206 2-Inch Car rded RC-2 Collar", which can also be found at Revane. Inspecting the roof vents for other problems, I noticed that the rubber collars were worn, and although they weren't leaking now i was scared for $2.27 and free shipping they work surprisingly well just slip them over your existing boot to protect it from further sun damage and extend its life and also provide a second seal around the vent pipe same again, it might not last as long as my 30 year old roof but I will just buy more if needed. The attached before and after photos show both of the above devices working on my roof vent are mounted.
