Solved my confusing speedometer problem
Once I figured out how to undo the electrical connection clip on the old one (spring clip, move away from the sensor with a thumbnail) it worked straight away and it came out. Make sure you insert the new one straight by hand, tighten with an open end wrench (19mm? doesn't have to be King Kong, just tight), snap the connector in place, done.
