Review on WEN BG4286 3 Amp 8 Inch Grinder by Steven Pankey

Revainrating 3 out of 5

Just save yourself the pain and suffering and catch up.

Just buy a Rikon for $50 more. It wasn't worth the pain and suffering. poor quality control in general. I have received mine. At first the 120 grit wheel had a big chunk. Not from delivery, but from the factory. Serious. Man. You should have seen it. CALL support. They send a new one. Lasts 4 days. Pick it up and finish building, and the medium-grit wheel doesn't rock side-to-side very well. Threw it on a broken wheel. Almost doesn't swing. Tried again with medium grit. yes, deadly hesitation. I'm stupid for not trying balance wheels before calling customer service for the first time. damned! So go to Lowes for a medium grit wheel as I won't wait a week for another wheel. just something to play around with until I can order a better one or until Van sends me one so it's "pretty well balanced" for now. I adjusted the wheels so I didn't have much lateral wobble, but there was still something wrong on the left side. I suspect a slightly bent shaft.? No more fiddling with it as it's fine, just no stain on the left side. Quality control wise there were a few small ill fitting parts with one of the guide pins for the rest. Luckily I don't need it as I put a Wolverine attachment on it and don't use the cheap standard tool rests. Plexiglas screens are useless, especially a magnifying glass. This thing is so distorted you can't see the damn thing. So into the junk that's gone and I'll make a new one or mod a better shredder. I should have sent it back but I'm in now and it's working fine after all the fuss. The installation of Wolverine is now suitable for him. I installed it on a Wen coffee grinder stand, which was actually fine. You will need to install a plywood base between the grinder and the stand to use the Wolverine setup and a 1/2" wood block stand between the grinder base and the plywood platform to allow the Wolverine base pieces to clear the grinder wheel guards. So.does it work.yes.was it worth it.no.For $50 more I think I could have avoided a lot of trouble. But it's a risk when you flip the dice on ven and things like that sometimes it doesn't cost anything. this time it's not worth it. Update: After playing around a lot with wheels that weren't concentric or wobbled when installed, even with custom wheels, I spent about an hour milling wheels and reading about how some people use these paper holes that we used to reinforce the holes in ring binders at school. But I didn't have them. notes on the adhesive edge. Then I removed all the covers and stands, ran a pencil along the inside edge of the cover, and turned the wheel by hand. Moved the pencil until it rubbed a mark on the side approaching the grinder. Then I loosened the wheel and pushed it out just enough to put a small stack of washers right into the friction point. Tightened it up tight, rotated it again by hand and used the pencil again until I had removed 90% of the sideways wobble. Only 2 or maximum 3 parts are required to fix it in one place. Now it works very well. Not perfect, but very, very good. I could then grind it with a diamond dresser with a flat tool and was able to get the wheel as nearly perfectly round as possible without buying more expensive dressers. Now it works as it should.

Pros
  • Low speed for maximum accuracy with minimum workpiece heat
Cons
  • Very expensive
