I admit that the crystal filler is preferable (for me). I tested the litter in large tanks and the cats were okay with the alternative box (versus clumping litter). The crystalline bedding is easier to handle, the only problem at first is the crystalline urine soup at the bottom of the pan. So I ordered this tray with tray lining. It was quite difficult to get it to click together, but I figured I'd get used to it. The first time I tried to separate the top from the trash can I had to use pliers to pry them apart. I put the old tray back and put the linens on the floor. Maybe that works better. This box is too heavy to use regularly. If they had a parting/joining tool or a pressure point I might recommend it, but until then I can only give 3 stars. I tried the tray again. The cats didn't seem to like the hard lid on the box so I took it off and they seem to prefer it and so do I (since I don't have to strain to put it on and take it off). . But I still have a litter box so I'm a lot happier.
