My dog swims like a seal on his own, dives and swims across rivers with ease. But I figured that for kayaking (or other water sports/activities) he would be better off wearing a life jacket while he travels. The velcro fits his stomach very well, it appears to be a custom fit once tightened, as does the front padding. The straps need to be adjusted from time to time as they are not that tight. So if you buy a ribbon for them or tie them, they will be secure and out of the way. Surprisingly the jacket doesn't (yet) snag on tree trunks and branches in the water and my dog seems to swim much smoother when wearing it. It is very easy to put on and take off and dries relatively quickly. If you're planning on spending a day on the water with your fluffy baby, this is a great investment.
